Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic domain extension is the only one supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to reserve john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Existing third-level names remained active.
